SHAKESPEARE GYM

Quintessence is opening what we’re calling the Shakespeare Gym - a space for local working actors to hone, practice, and apply classical performance skills. Rather than focusing solely on audition prep, the Gym is meant to bring clarity and specificity to your practice through our artist community in a flexible workshop format. Working with esteemed coaches, members of the Gym will build upon their understanding of text, voice, speech, and movement to strengthen their individual craft.

Experience Needed/Materials Needed

The Shakespeare Gym is a space for pre-professional and working actors. While a resume and headshot is not required upon registration, a foundation of acting training is strongly encouraged.

The common text for our Fall Session is HAMLET. Please familiarize yourself with the text prior to a session, as that will be the starting point for every session this fall.

Gym Community Goals:

  • The Gym is a space for pre-professional and working actors in Philadelphia. We encourage folks signing up to have a foundation of acting training and encourage folks of diverse acting backgrounds (musical theatre, devised, experimental, contemporary, etc.) to participate.

  • We believe there are many approaches to performing Shakespeare. We hope the diversity of skills you learn in the Gym will enhance your understanding of classical text, but not define your individual approach.

  • Gym members will collectively study one Shakespeare play and practically apply their skills to scene and monologue work from said play. When we begin monologue work later in the session, we expect members to come with their piece memorized in order to practice these skills effectively.
