Director of Development
Reports To: Executive Director
Type: Full Time
Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 plus benefits and paid time off
Position Summary
Quintessence Theatre, now in its 16 th season of producing epic, classic theatre in Northwest Philadelphia, seeks an experienced, strategic and mission-driven Director of Development to join our team. In 2024, Quintessence purchased its longtime home, the historic Sedgwick Theater on Germantown Avenue, and is embarking on an ambitious renovation project and Capital Campaign to create a performing arts center for its community. The Director of Development leads Quintessence Theatre Group’s capital campaign while driving sustained growth in major gift revenue. This role focuses primarily on campaign strategy, major donor cultivation and solicitation, and long-term relationship management. The Director of Development supervises the Associate Director of Development, who leads annual fund efforts, and works collaboratively to ensure strong alignment between campaign and annual giving initiatives.
Working closely with the Executive Director, Producing Artistic Director, Board of Directors, Campaign Committee, and Development Committee, the Director of Development plays a central leadership role in advancing the Campaign for Quintessence at the Sedgwick and strengthening the organization’s culture of philanthropy.
Primary Responsibilities
Capital Campaign and Major Gift Leadership
Provide strategic leadership for all capital campaign and major donor fundraising efforts in partnership with the Executive Director, Producing Artistic Director, and Campaign Committee. Develop and implement comprehensive campaign strategies designed to meet ambitious fundraising goals.
Support for the Campaign, Major and Planned Gifts
Building and managing a robust major donor pipeline
Developing campaign gift tables and solicitation strategies
Conducting prospect research and qualification
Strategically engaging the Executive Director and Producing Artistic Director in donor conversations as appropriate
Implement a Planned Giving strategy
Donor Cultivation, Stewardship and Event Support
Leading and participating in donor cultivation and solicitation meetings
In collaboration with the Executive Director, plan and execute campaign cultivation and fundraising events.
Support opening night events and additional Classics Forward Society (CFS) gatherings, as well as other theatre-related events as needed.
Represent Quintessence at external engagements to build visibility and strengthen donor relationships.
Campaign Specific
Support development of campaign materials, including the case for support, pitch decks, etc.
Partnering with board and Campaign Committee members to identify and cultivate high-capacity prospects and implement a plan for the committee role and engagement efforts
Planning and executing campaign-focused cultivation and fundraising events
Ensuring that the entire leadership team is meeting and achieving campaign fundraising goals throughout the campaign
Ensure campaign fundraising efforts are coordinated with annual giving strategies in collaboration with the Associate Director of Development.
Systems, Documentation & Gift Management
Strengthen and oversee campaign and donor systems and processes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and strong donor stewardship. Responsibilities include:
Drafting and managing campaign gift agreements
Ensuring timely and meaningful gift acknowledgments, signed by the Executive Director
Maintaining detailed records of prospect strategies, meeting outcomes, solicitations, pledges, payment schedules, and reminders
Annual Fund Strategy & Oversight
Supervise and support the Associate Director of Development in annual fund planning and execution. Work collaboratively to qualify prospects for campaign participation while maintaining strong annual giving performance.
Provide strategic input on:
Twice-yearly annual fund campaigns (calendar year-end and fiscal year-end)
Donor movement from annual giving into major and campaign-level support
Alignment between campaign messaging and annual appeals
Board & Internal Engagement
Serve as a key staff partner to the Board of Directors, Campaign Committee, and Development Committee. Responsibilities include:
Attending board and committee meetings
Meeting regularly with the Associate Director of Development and Development Committee Chair to review goals, progress, and engagement strategies
Supporting board members in fulfilling fundraising responsibilities, including donor outreach and campaign solicitations

Creative Content Associate
Reports To: Executive Director
Type: Full Time
Salary Range: $42,000 - $47,000 plus benefits and paid time off
Position Summary
Quintessence Theatre, now finishing its 16 th season of producing epic, classic theatre in Northwest Philadelphia, seeks an experienced Content Creator to join our team. The Creative Content Associate creates and edits all print and digital content (social media, video, graphics) to promote Quintessence and its productions. This position works with the Artistic Director, Executive Director, Marketing Manager and Brand Manager to set the strategic vision and production of all visual and written materials across digital, print, and video platforms. Night and weekend work is required during production periods. This is a full-time, salaried position which reports to the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities
Institutional Marketing:
Set organization’s marketing strategy alongside Artistic Director, Executive Director and Marketing Manager, and create institutional marketing content including for the capital campaign, season and individual departments (Production, Education, Development.)
Manage website design and maintenance
Manage content for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube
Collaborate with Marketing Manager on Biweekly Mailchim p emails, taking charge of their overall design
Manage content creation for Sedgwick marquee video screens
Production Marketing:
Design and create production marketing materials, including but not limited to, posters,postcard mailings, email campaigns, print ads, video trailers, and social media content
Capture and edit pre-production photography, rehearsal photography and video, production photoshoot, b-roll and archival video recording
Design and create playbill for each production
Design and create production specific merchandise
Education:
Design and create marketing materials for student matinees, workshops, classes and summer camp, including ads, flyers, posters and social media content.
Design education publications/study guides
Design and create education specific merchandise
Development:
Design materials for the annual fund, including the annual holiday card.
Design materials for the capital campaign, as requested by the Director of Development.
Qualifications and Requested Skills
Software Proficiency: Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Squarespace, Mailchimp and all
social media platforms.
Creative Skills: Photography, videography, website design, and ad content creation.

Artistic Associate & Company Manager
Reports To: Producing Artistic Director
Type: Part-time
Hourly Rate: $20 per hour
Position Summary
Quintessence Theatre, now finishing its 16th season of producing epic, classic theatre in Northwest Philadelphia, seeks an Artistic Associate & Company Manager to join our team. The Artistic Associate and Company Manager provides support in the areas of casting, company management and producing.
This is a part-time hourly position averaging 20 hours per week, with some night and weekend work required during production periods.
Responsibilities
Casting:
• Assist Artistic Director with all casting efforts by reviewing submissions, scheduling appointments, preparing sides, booking spaces and running auditions as needed.
• Handle travel logistics for any out-of-town auditions or artists coming to Philadelphia from out of town for auditions on site at Quintessence.
• Attend all casting sessions.
• Attend local theatre productions and showcases to scout actors and artistic talent.
Company Management:
• Make travel arrangements for visiting artists in coordination with Director of Production.
• Communicate housing assignments with visiting artists prior to arrival and act as point of contact for all housing and residency issues during their stay.
• Facilitate maintenance and ensure upkeep of artist housing.
• Prepare housing in advance of artist arrival by coordinating cleaning and ensuring housewares and linens are prepared.
• Act as one of the primary points of contact for any housing needs that occur during artist stays.
• Support the wellbeing and comfort of all guest artists.
Artistic Support:
• Assist Artistic Director with general correspondence, document preparation, script reading and script preparation.
• Assist Artistic Director and Production Manager in tracking weekly artist hours and reimbursements.
• Assist Artistic Director in bookkeeping and provide coding on Artistic and Executive expenses for outsourced finance team.
